Mailbox
Background information (2)
By late 20th centaury,
pressure had amounted on the United States Postal Services and other postal
service providers such as the British Post
Office to allow people install
mailboxes designs of their choice. Another factor that pushed for the need of
change from the anonymous Joroleman designs was the increased insecurity cases
either of theft or vandalism that were associated with the design. As a result,
USPS and other postal service providers across the world allowed individuals to
design their own letterboxes as long as they met the required standards. The
standards provided guidance on the limits accepted both in shape and size. For
instance, in Europe any one is allowed to design a mailbox of his or her choice
as long as the dimensions of things such as mail slots aperture, internal
volume and mounting height are not below or do not exceed certain set limits
(Hamel, 2000). Appendix A shows the set standards for mailboxes in Europe.
The
change of stand of USPS resulted into diversification of mailboxes. It was then
that people started designing mailboxes of their choice as long as they adhered
to the common standards. A major factor that contributed to the kind of design
chosen by a particular person was the urge of wanting to be unique. Everyone
wanted to have a mailbox different from the common Joroleman design and
probably be the only design in the neighborhood. What followed was that most
people started designing mailboxes according to things they like, logos of
sports teams they support, their favorite animals, their best cars and house
designs among others. In the article; How to Design a Brick Mailbox,
eHow.com (n.d.) state, “Design a custom, indestructible, brick mailbox that
reflects your personal style, prevents vandalism and adds a perfect touch of
class, beauty or even whimsy to the home” (p. 1). In the article eHow.com
argues that one can manage to put a perfect touch of class to his brick
mailboxes when he chooses bricks that match those of his house and matching the
shape of the letterbox with that of the house.
Mailbox
designs have become diverse that people have began choosing designs that
clearly tell of their personality in one way or the other. In the article; What
does your mailbox say about you? Meadowlake Gardener (2011) writes, “The
mailbox is one of the things that create a first impression.
Unfortunately, in some cases, that is not always the image we have in mind” (p.
1). In the article Meadowlake Gardener state that mailboxes just like other
area in the homestead should be given adequate attention and should be looked
after just as we look after our house, car and gates (Meadowlake Gardener,
2011). In the article it is argued that mailboxes play a big role when choosing
a house in instance when one is moving to a new house or wants to buy a new
house. They equally count in the general value of the house.
