Mailbox
Discussion
A
mailbox may be designed in various ways that will appeal the owner. In her
article; What does your Mailbox say about your Home? Kathy (2011)
writes, “Home Owners can choose from Decorative to Traditional and from Themed
to Novelty along with several contemporary styles and
designs in a wide range
of colors and materials” (p. 1). This implies that mailboxes today can be
designed with interest of the owner who may decide to show his personality through
the design, size, shape or color of the letterboxes. Taking a walk through my
neighborhood, I noticed that several people had mailboxes with designs that
represented their passions. Most of them themed, some on tradition while others
were on nature. Talking to the owners, most people revealed that one key
determinant for the design of their mailbox was the urge of wanting to have
something unique in the neighborhood and that could represent what they felt
about mail receptacles. Kathy states that mailboxes give visitors the first
impression once they get into our homes and as such, most people will install a
mailbox design that best represent their state and taste of class (Kathy,
2011).
One
fascinating design was the Puppy design. The mailbox is designed to look
exactly as a puppy pet. This is an obvious design that you will get with most
people who like keeping pets or animals. The design is common in the
neighborhood with people choosing on their favorite pets. During the research,
I established that close to 85% of people who had animal-themed mailboxes kept
the same animal. A fascinating example was with one homestead belonging to a
navy who had a mailbox with the design of a dolphin. It was interesting to find
out that the navy had kept a live dolphin called Rex in his backyard, the same
name that appeared on the mailbox. When asked of the reasons for the choice of
the design, Mr. Norris stated that he has a passion for his career as a navy
and dolphins are his best friends he encounters in the line of duty. In
addition, he kept several pictures of different dolphins that he collected from
now and then. The conclusion on this was that most people who kept
animal-themed mailboxes represented a great passion for animals especially
pets. Just like the case of Mr. Norris, this could tell of their personality as
far as the love for animals and pets is concerned.
